It all started with a mission to explore flight. From our establishment in 1939 as the second U.S. national aeronautical research lab – that built the most massive and capable aerodynamics testing facilities in existence – Ames Research Center has grown deep roots of intersecting expertise. How did it all start? Learn more about our origins in the 1930s in this video produced in 2009. Join us from April through December 2019 as we celebrate 80 years of incredible history of what is now NASA's Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley.

NASA Working Remotely- How Astronauts Upgraded a Complex Experiment in Space.webm

NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory underwent a major hardware upgrade aboard the International Space Station in January 2020. The mission team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California guided astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir through the installation of the new hardware via live video conference. By chilling atom clouds to just above absolute zero, or the coldest temperature matter can reach, Cold Atom Lab enables scientists to directly observe unique atomic behaviors, helping to answer questions about how our world works at the smallest scales. This new hardware will help expand Cold Atom Lab's capabilities.

Upgrading the Space Station’s Cold Atom Lab With Mixed Reality.webm

NASA is looking into whether mixed reality technology could help with repairs and upgrades on the cutting-edge Cold Atom Lab aboard the space station. NASA’s Cold Atom Lab is a first-of-its-kind physics laboratory operating in Earth orbit. About the size of a mini-fridge, it hosts multiple experiments that explore the fundamental nature of atoms by cooling them down to nearly absolute zero (the coldest temperature matter can reach). The ultracold atoms provide a window into the quantum realm, where matter exhibits strange behaviors that underpin many modern technologies. In 2020, during her extended stay aboard the space station, NASA astronaut Christina Koch worked with Earth-based mission team members to install upgraded hardware in Cold Atom Lab. Along with adding new capabilities to the novel facility, the effort proved something else: that such maintenance could be performed without the need to lug the laboratory back to Earth. Plans are underway for a series of additional upgrades to Cold Atom Lab in the coming years, so the mission team is investigating ways to make these activities more efficient. Earlier this summer, they successfully tested a new tool that could help with that goal: a Microsoft HoloLens, a mixed reality (also known as augmented reality, or AR) headset. On July 15, astronaut Megan McArthur used the AR headset while she replaced a piece of hardware inside Cold Atom Lab, enabling the facility to produce ultracold potassium atoms in addition to the rubidium atoms that have been used since the facility started operating in 2018.

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab- The Coolest Experiment in the Universe.webm

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab will produce clouds of ultra-cold atoms aboard the International Space Station to perform quantum physics experiments in microgravity. Atoms are chilled to about one 10 billionth of a degree above Absolute Zero, or about 10 billion times colder than the average temperature of deep space. At those temperatures, atoms behave in strange ways, allowing scientists to investigate the fundamental nature of matter. The clouds of ultra-cold atoms the Cold Atom Lab produces are called Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs), a bizarre state of matter in which atoms exhibit quantum behavior at macroscopic a scale you can see. BECs make it possible for researchers to probe the fundamental nature of matter. Hundreds of BEC experiments exist on Earth, but on the International Space Station, free from the pull of gravity, scientists will be able to observe BECs for much longer than what is possible on Earth, and reach even colder temperatures than what is typically achieved on the ground. The Cold Atom Lab will move scientists another step closer to solving some of the biggest mysteries in the universe, such as understanding the nature of dark matter and dark energy and solving the disagreement between quantum mechanics and the theory of gravity. Research done on the Cold Atom Lab can also have practical applications, such as making improvements to atomic clock technologies, which are used in spacecraft navigation, as well as the GPS satellites that provide navigation information to devices like smartphones. Cold Atom Lab research could also lead to improvements to quantum sensors used for remote sensing on spacecraft. These sensors can be used for a variety of applications, including monitoring Earth’s changing climate and remotely studying the internal makeup of planets and asteroids.

KSC-05-S-00308 (ksc 101005 bacteria).webm

Scientists at the Space Life Sciences Lab at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida are researching ways to improve the health of astronauts in space. Michele Birmele, a research scientist with Dynamac Corporation at Kennedy, is working with a bacteria bioreporter that will glow when bad bacteria are present. 'We're going to use a virus to detect whether or not there are any bad bacteria in the spacecraft environment.' In her lab, Birmele is testing several different strains of viruses. They're carefully placed in a special computer that will 'read' each well on the test plate to determine if those samples will luminesce, or glow, in response to target bacteria. 'The biosensors have been genetically modified containing a certain set of genes that we wanted....from a marine bacteria called Vibrio fisheri. Now, Vibrio glows, it produces light, when you look at it. It actually has a symbiosis with a marine squid and it glows in the presence of, say, stress, so these cells communicate to each other.' Once Birmele's research is complete, the good bacteria portion will be mated to a microchip smaller than a penny. The technology will eventually be flown on space vehicles and the International Space Station to alert the crew to potential health issues that can be addressed quickly.

Best Space Station Science Pictures of 2021.webm

It has been a busy year of research aboard the International Space Station. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1, Crew-2, and Crew-3 missions supported hundreds of science experiments aboard the orbiting laboratory. Multiple Soyuz spacecrafts carried astronauts to and from station. An upgraded cargo Dragon spacecraft returned time sensitive research to scientists on the ground. Astronauts and cosmonauts conducted 13 spacewalks, and their work included installing new solar panels to augment and upgrade the station’s power supply. Chiles and lettuce were harvested as a part of plant research preparing us for deep space missions, and technologies were tested for the upcoming Artemis missions to the Moon. Look at some of the best photos of breakthrough investigations crew members worked on in 2021: https://go.nasa.gov/30Iy8d8
